African Savannah Elephants are an iconic species of the continent's expansive ecosystems.

Elephants in the African Savannah lands

The African Savannah is home to close to 2 million large plant-eating mammals, including the largest land animal on earth- the Elephant. These massive creatures play an important role in the health of the ecosystem.

Elephants are herbivores, and their diet consists of grass, leaves, and small plants. Did you know? When elephants eat plants it keeps the growth of new plants in check, this conservatisms' believe keeps the savannah lands healthy. On top of that, wildlife in the savannah spread and fertilize the soil with their dug.

African countries home to elephants, as stated from the largest populations in the South and East include Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa. These African gentle giants are easy to spot on games drives in national parks and protected sanctuaries.

Uganda is home to an estimated 5,000 elephants, which are seen in the landscapes of Murchison Falls National ParkQueen Elizabeth National ParkKidepo Valley National ParkKibale Forest National Park and Mt Elgon National Park. Elephants have a very slow population growth,  reproducing at a rate of one calf per female every 8.6 years.

Habitat loss and poaching has put African elephants under threat. According to the International Union for the Conservation Of Nature (IUCN) and other conservation bodies on the continent, the African elephant is now considered vulnerable to extinction. Countries are working hard to protect these magnificent creatures by educating the public about the importance of these animals.

"Growing up, I was unaware of how endangered animals are until I started reading storybooks that depicted their precarious state. Self education has increased my awareness and motivates me to take action in protecting these majestic creatures through sustainable travel experiences." Tumwesigye Brian
